Wanting some updated couples portraits or maybe fun and flirty engagement photos? Let me bring the photoshoot to you! In-home photo sessions are so much fun. You can relax, get cozy, and snuggle your four-legged friend. Bring out the popcorn and pop the bubbly for the most fun photo session you’ve ever had! And, because you get to kick back at home, you’re sure to end up with amazing photos that authentically reflect your personality and the great chemistry you’ve got going on. You don’t have to worry about posing in public or nosy onlookers. Here are few ways you can prepare your home for your lifestyle photo session. No need to redecorate your home if you love color. Your home is a beautiful reflection of you! But if you decide to add extra touches before your in-home session, consider using neutral accents so as not to detract from you and your partner, the subjects. Extra patterns and colors may look pretty, but for photos, they can be a little distracting. You need to be the focal point of each image, not your bedding. If possible, choose neutral colors and classic designs for blankets/throws, pillows, bedding, and even your outfits. That way, your photos will look timeless and true—perfect for wall art, albums, and cards.
On that note, while I won’t ask you to add anything to your home, you may consider taking down a few things temporarily. Ideally, we want a nice, clean backdrop. It should feel like home, but maybe tuck knickknacks and other decorative odds and ends out of sight. No need to wrack your brain for intricate at home photoshoot ideas—the simpler the better!
This article by SpaceWise has some great ideas for minimalist décor. From clever storage spaces to pops of color and ways to infuse greenery, you may find something that “sparks joy” in there.
I’m realistic. I know you live in your home. I have mail on the counter, bags on the chairs, and shoes by the door just like you. But for your photoshoot, stick the everyday stuff in the closet (or under the bed—I won’t look 😉). Think about which rooms you’d like to use during your session, and tidy them up a bit. You may not want your dental retainer, workout gear, and scattered office supplies sticking out in the background. If we’re in the kitchen, your normal centerpiece and items like a coffeepot or a couple decorative mugs or flour jars are cute and bring personality and warmth to the photos, but dirty dishes, alllll the kitchen appliances, and grocery items—not so much.
Open it up! Natural light is the best light source. It brings a fresh, clean, and beautiful glow to your lifestyle images. Pull back those black-out curtains and use sheer white curtains or blinds instead. We can adjust the blinds to let in the perfect amount of light. When choosing which rooms you want to use during your at home photoshoot, consider the best natural light in your home. I love rooms with large windows or windows on multiple walls!
Once you identify areas with lots of natural light, set up comfortable seating arrangements ahead of time. You won’t want to stand the whole time, so rearrange the couch or chairs so you’re cozy. Bar stools make for cute kitchen photos. Rugs and pillows are great for fun floor photos too!
