I don’t know if I’ve said it enough, but I absolutely love it when couples bring their four-legged friends along for their engagement session. And Kelly and Victor’s winter shoot was everything I adore about sessions with dogs wrapped into one unforgettable afternoon.
Their pupper had me cracking up from the very beginning. Between zoomies through fresh snow, hilarious games of fetch, and the occasional slobbery kiss, I could have happily spent the entire session documenting his antics. There’s something about a snow day that brings out the playful side in everyone—dogs especially—and this sweet pup took full advantage of it.

Of course, as much fun as we were having, Kelly and Victor needed at least a few photos without tennis balls flying through the air. But that’s the beauty of incorporating pets into your session—you get a perfect blend of candid, joy-filled moments and timeless, romantic portraits.
This session had it all: snowy adventures with their pup, charming downtown storefronts, iconic crosswalk shots, a cozy coffee break, and so much genuine connection. A session as fun as this reminds you that engagement photos aren’t just about how things look but also how they feel. These two really looked like they were on a day date (and they kind of were!).

We can probably all agree that photoshoots with pets are adorable. But more than cuteness, engagement photos with your dog can completely transform the energy of your session.
There’s a reason animals are often used as therapy companions. They have this incredible ability to calm nerves, ease tension, and help you stay present. And truthfully, being in front of a camera can feel a little awkward at first.
Kelly and Victor proved this. Playing with their pup, they laughed more, relaxed, and forgot the camera. Instead of posing perfectly, they just enjoyed time together running in the snow, tossing a ball, and soaking up the moment.
You can’t fake that kind of authenticity. And it always shows up beautifully in your photos.

If you’re on the fence about including your furry friend in your engagement photos, here are a few more reasons why it might be one of the best decisions you make:
Your relationship isn’t just the two of you—your pet is part of daily life. Including them makes your engagement session more personal and adds an extra dose of love. Years from now, these photos will reflect this season, paws and all.
Dogs ignore posing and lighting rules, making them great for candid moments. Their unpredictability leads to real laughter, natural movement, and those in-between moments that often become favorites.
If you’re feeling nervous, your dog becomes the perfect distraction. Instead of focusing on where to put your hands or how to stand, your attention shifts to something familiar and comforting.
From playful action shots to cozy snuggles, pets naturally create variety in your gallery. One minute you’re running through the snow, the next you’re cuddled up for a quiet moment. It all unfolds organically.

Not every pup will sit still, follow commands, or enjoy a full-length photoshoot—and that’s okay. You can still include them in your engagement photos with your dog in a way that feels stress-free and fun.
One of the easiest options is to have your pet make a cameo. Bring them along for the first part of your session, capture some playful, heartfelt moments, and then have a friend or family member take them home or for a walk while you finish your shoot. Or flip it and bring them in at the end!
Another idea: pick a familiar spot, such as your home or your dog’s favorite park. Pets relax in places they know, leading to better photos and happier experiences for all.
And truly, as your photographer, they don’t need to be perfect. The best images often come from chaos—the mid-zoomies, the head tilts, the way they wedge themselves between you for attention. Embracing unpredictability is part of the magic.

I flipped Kelly and Victor’s session for this post because the engagement photos with their dog are just so dang cute. But we actually began their session downtown, where charming storefronts and crosswalks added a completely different vibe. The contrast between cozy winter textures and urban backdrops gave their gallery so much depth.
To gear up for play time in the snow, we added in a little coffee break—because nothing says winter romance like warming up with your favorite drink at a local cafe.
Then, we headed to a nearby park where the powder was plentiful so their pup could play. He completely stole the show, bounding through the snow and turning every moment into a playful memory.
Through it all, one thing stayed consistent: their connection. Whether they were laughing at their dog’s antics or sharing a quiet moment together, every part of their session felt genuine, relaxed, and full of love.

If your dog is part of your everyday life, the answer is almost always yes.
Engagement photos with your dog aren’t just cute—they capture your real relationship: laughter, energy, and little in-between moments.
When you bring your whole world into your photos—including the messy, playful, unpredictable parts—you end up with something far more meaningful than perfectly posed images.
You get memories that feel like you.
