Redefining City Hall Weddings: Featuring the Allegheny County Courthouse

A Timeless Pittsburgh Courthouse Wedding with Grand Staircase Ceremony

Rachel and Austin’s Allegheny County Courthouse wedding showcases the potential of our local courthouse (and why it’s a great elopement destination for visiting couples). From portraits throughout the building to their ceremony on the grand staircase, their Pittsburgh City Hall micro wedding felt timeless, refined, and reflective of who they are as a couple.

Not many courthouses allow wedding ceremony setups — with reception options, much less. Most courthouse weddings are quick, in-and-out exchanges inside a small, office-like room. But here in Pittsburgh, couples are blessed with a historic courthouse with captivating architecture, natural light, and the flexibility to host a personalized celebration.

Why the Allegheny County Courthouse Is Unique

The Allegheny County Courthouse not your ordinary government building. Designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, it’s considered a premier example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, featuring bold granite masonry, Romanesque arches, and an impressive 229-foot tower. The building reflects late-Victorian design and is widely recognized as a defining 19th-century landmark.

Inside, sweeping staircases, ornate arches, vintage lamps, and beautiful natural light pouring in from above bring this venue to life. It offers grandeur for your big day as well as intimate nooks for more intimate moments and editorial portraits.

And unlike most courthouses, the Allegheny County Courthouse allows couples to host a traditional ceremony setup on the grand staircase! There’s even a piano available for use, which brings another layer of personalization and atmosphere.

Whether you’re a local couple looking for a convenient courthouse wedding without sacrificing meaningful details, or an out-of-town couple searching for a beautiful place to elope with loved ones, the Allegheny County Courthouse offers a one-of-a-kind experience.

Rachel & Austin’s Allegheny County Courthouse Wedding Portraits

For Rachel and Austin’s Allegheny County Courthouse micro wedding, we started with portraits around the courthouse. We began outside on the courthouse steps in front of the gorgeous wooden doors, then made our way inside to explore the building’s stunning architecture.

We took our time, pausing for quiet, intimate moments along the way. I loved how these two embraced the late-19th-century setting in their outfit choices. Rachel wore an elegant ivory empire-waist gown with a corset bodice that looked perfectly at home in the historic space, and Austin, who complemented his bride in a black-and-white pinstripe suit reflective of that era. She looked like a vision as she moved through the courthouse, her dress catching the light from the tall windows above.

One of my favorite things about photographing weddings here is the space’s versatility. Whether your style is traditional, modern, or editorial, the courthouse adapts beautifully. Hollywood glam and modern chic look just as incredible here as classic wedding attire.

A Grand Staircase Ceremony with Loved Ones

Rachel and Austin exchanged vows on the courthouse’s grand staircase, with their closest family members in attendance. The natural light, stone arches, and sweeping architecture couldn’t be more fitting for a romantic vow exchange and iconic kiss to seal the deal.

Afterward, we had the space to capture all of the family portraits that parents and grandparents especially love — another advantage of hosting your ceremony here. Unlike a quick courthouse appointment, you don’t have to rush to get a few shots in on your way out the door.

Rachel and Austin opted to skip a traditional dinner reception and instead celebrated privately with their families afterward.

Reception & Celebration Options at the Allegheny County Courthouse

While Rachel and Austin went a different route, I want to mention that one of the biggest surprises about the Allegheny County Courthouse is that it doesn’t just offer ceremony space; it also provides options for cocktail hours and dinner receptions.

The outdoor courtyard can accommodate up to 150 guests for a seated dinner or 200 guests for a standing cocktail-style event, making it perfect for couples who want to host a larger celebration while still keeping the courthouse aesthetic. The courtyard is available for private events from May through October and features a beautiful garden atmosphere in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. (Allegheny County)

Couples can host a cocktail hour, dinner, or even a full wedding reception here, with rentals/amenities! — something rarely available at courthouse venues.

Not Your Average Courthouse Wedding in Pittsburgh

The Allegheny County Courthouse is an ideal option if you want a courthouse or elopement wedding with loved ones, gorgeous portraits, and a more traditional ceremony.

I’ve photographed many weddings here, and the detailed architecture always delivers timeless, refined portraits that you wouldn’t expect from a courthouse wedding. It’s also just flexible enough to reflect each couple’s style — whether that’s classic, modern, editorial, or something entirely unique. (It’s great for engagement photos, too.)

Rachel and Austin’s courthouse wedding perfectly captured what makes this venue so special: a thoughtful celebration, beautiful architecture, and a relaxed, intentional experience surrounded by the special people in your life.

Most envision courthouse weddings as quick and impersonal, formal affairs. But the Allegheny County Courthouse offers the chance to slow down, celebrate intentionally, and create a day that’s unforgettable.
