8 Ideas to Make Your Lifestyle Session Fun & Fabulous!

So many engagement and couples photoshoots on Instagram and Pinterest have become monotonous. Instead, I’d encourage you not to worry about how others will see it but rather focus on the memories you’ll make and the story you’ll tell. Let your hair down, have some fun, and be a little quirky. Years later, you’ll be so glad you captured your true colors because that’s what makes you work as a couple—not perfect poses and fake filters. Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

  • Painting Session (Splatters Encouraged!)
  • At-Home Picnic
  • Amateur Cooking Class
  • Photo Booth & Dress Up
  • Showcase a Shared Hobby
  • Bring in Your Furbabies
  • Turn Your Living Room into a Dancefloor
  • Seasonal Activity (this featured couple did an adorable pumpkin carving couple’s session)

Now that you’ve got a few ideas in mind (share them with me, please?), here are a few tips to help you prep for your at-home engagement or couple’s photoshoot with me.

Prepping the Space

Pick a Spot

Choose areas in your home that reflect your personalities as a couple. Try your cozy living room, sunlit kitchen, or colorful backyard; make sure the space represents your unique love story.

Find the Natural Light

Take advantage of natural light to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Open up curtains or blinds to let in as much light as possible. Avoid harsh overhead lighting that can cast unflattering shadows.

Declutter & Tidy Up

A clutter-free environment will help your photos look polished and professional. Take a few moments to tidy up the space, removing any distractions or unnecessary objects to ensure that you and your partner are the focal point of the images.

Personalize the Space

Add personal touches to the setting that reflect your relationship. Hang up some photos of your favorite memories together, display meaningful artwork, or incorporate sentimental objects that are special to both of you.

Setting the Scene & Wardrobe

Props

Select props that elevate the theme or concept you’ve chosen for your photoshoot. For example, if you’re going for a cozy night in theme, consider using blankets, pillows, fairy lights, and your favorite board games as props. If you want the allure of a romantic picnic, bring along a picnic basket, a vintage blanket, champagne glasses, and some fresh flowers to create a romantic atmosphere.

Outfits

Casual chic neutrals are always a great option for in-home sessions. If your theme is more out of the box, I’d love to brainstorm some styles with you.

Accessories

You probably don’t need many (if any) outfit accessories for a lifestyle session, but feel free to dress in layers to change your look quickly. The home setting acts as the props and accessories, so it’s best to keep things simple.

And . . . Action! Capturing Candid Moments

When it comes to lifestyle couples photoshoots, the key is to capture natural and authentic moments between you and your partner. Focus on creating an atmosphere that allows you to relax and be yourselves. The goal is to create a comfortable and familiar setting, allowing you to let your guard down and stay in the moment.

Once you have the location sorted, it’s time to think about posing. Remember, the idea is to capture genuine emotions and connections, so opt for poses that feel natural to you as a couple. You can start with simple actions like holding hands, cuddling, or stealing a kiss. These small gestures can go a long way in conveying the love and affection between you two.

Try incorporating movement into your poses to make the photoshoot even more dynamic. Dance, twirl, or even jump around together. (Furbabies make this a little easier.) Don’t be afraid to let loose and have fun with it!

Remember, the key to capturing natural moments is to be present and in the moment. Forget about the camera and focus on each other. Engage in conversations, share inside jokes, and let your connection shine through. These candid moments will create the most beautiful and genuine photographs you’ll treasure for years.
