Flirty & Fun: How to Add Movement & Playfulness to Your Engagement Session

There is a spontaneous magic that happens when a couple stops worrying about what to do with their hands and starts having fun together. That was Ashleigh and Cody’s playful downtown Pittsburgh engagement photo session in a nutshell. Cute, flirty, playful, and so full of movement that not even a hint of boredom crept in. They stood, sat, crouched, twirled, jogged, kissed, and strolled their way through the city with a dynamic chemistry that makes my photographer heart want to scream, “You two are adorable!” approximately 87 times.

If you are worried your engagement session might feel awkward or like you are just standing in front of a pretty background smiling until your face hurts, let Ashleigh and Cody be your proof that your photos can feel so much more like you.

1. Movement Makes Engagement Photos Feel Natural

One of the easiest ways to make your engagement photos feel relaxed is to keep your bodies in motion.

Instead of only standing still and smiling, we built Ashleigh and Cody’s session around little actions. Walking across crosswalks. Sitting close on steps. Jogging toward the camera. Leaning into each other on ledges. Holding hands while moving through downtown Pittsburgh. Crouching down, popping back up, sneaking in kisses, and turning small city spaces into moments that felt alive.

Movement gives you something to focus on besides the camera. It also creates those in-between moments that are usually the sweetest: the almost-kiss, the mid-laugh, the way your hand naturally reaches for theirs, and even the little glance you give each other when a “pose” feels funny. Those are the photos that feel honest.

And no, you do not have to know what to do. That is my job. I will guide you with prompts that help you loosen up without making you feel like you are performing. Before you know it, you’ll be creating your own cues.

2. Choose Outfits You Can Actually Move In

Ashleigh and Cody’s first outfits were the perfect example of simple, coordinated, and comfortable. She wore a plain white T-shirt and jeans, and he wore a black T-shirt and jeans. They tied the casual look together with matching red-and-white sneakers, which added the cutest little pop of personality.

This kind of outfit works so well for movement-based photos because you can actually move. You can sit on steps, jog down a sidewalk, crouch, wrap up in each other, or stroll across a bridge without tugging or worrying that your outfit is fighting you.

For the second half, Ashleigh changed into a flowy emerald-green minidress, and Cody wore a white button-down with navy slacks. This gave us a completely different feel while still leaving room for movement. Her dress caught the motion beautifully during twirls and walking shots, while his look felt polished but not formal.

My biggest advice? Think about how your clothes will move, not just how they will look standing still.

3. Use the City Like a Playground

Downtown Pittsburgh is full of ways to add movement if you know how to look for them. Steps, bridges, crosswalks, landmarks, ledges, sidewalks, railings, and open corners can all become part of the set.

For Ashleigh and Cody, we did not just stop at a location, take a few photos, and move on. We used the surroundings to create variety. Steps gave us seated and crouched poses. Crosswalks brought in blurred motion and a little city energy. Bridges gave us space to stroll and snuggle at sunset. Ledges added height, shape, and opportunities for flirty interactions.

That is one of my favorite parts of a downtown engagement session. There is always something to do. Even the smallest architectural detail can become a way to keep you connected and moving.

4. Playfulness Does Not Have to Mean Cheesy

When I say playful engagement photos, but you aren’t one for piggyback rides, hopscotch, awkward props, or anything that feels completely unlike you, know that playfulness can be subtle. It can be a hand squeeze, a hip bump, a quick spin, a pretend race across the sidewalk, or whispering something ridiculous just to make the other person laugh. Meanwhile, a little thigh, rib, or hip squeeze can add intimacy and romance that goes beyond friendship-level (these are your engagement photos, after all).

Ashleigh and Cody had this flirty, dynamic energy that made every prompt feel easy. They were not afraid to be a little goofy, but nothing felt over the top. Their session was playful because they were engaged with each other the entire time.

A Session That Feels Like You

Your engagement session should feel like a date, a celebration, and a little pause in the middle of wedding planning to remember why you are doing all of this in the first place. It should not feel like a checklist of poses.

Ashleigh and Cody’s downtown Pittsburgh engagement session was the perfect reminder that photos come alive when you are willing to move, laugh, play, and trust the process. Their matching sneakers, her emerald dress, the city backdrops, the twirls, the kisses, the sidewalk strolls—it all came together in a way that felt so reflective of who they are as a real couple with authentic interactions.

If you want engagement photos that feel natural, fun, and anything but boring, bring the outfits, bring the chemistry, and bring an open mind. I will bring the prompts, the locations, the encouragement, and the occasional “oh my gosh, you are so cute” from behind the camera.
