I love unique engagement sessions. I have a few locations I personally love to recommend (especially as a recently engaged gal myself), but if you have certain style or place in mind, I’m all ears! Your engagement session should tell a piece of your story. These are probably some of your first professional photos together, so let’s add a heavy dose of personality, romance, and authenticity into your session. Let loose and have fun with it! Catherine and Alex are fun, adventurous, and love a good IPA. Hitchhiker Brewing Co. in Mt. Lebo, a local Pittsburgh brewery, was the perfect location for their engagement session. It exudes lots of local ambiance and charm. Then, we headed over to Bird Park for some more fall love, complete with all the beautiful leaves, a warm blanket, and tons of smooches and laughter.

3 Ways to Spice Up Your Engagement Session

1. Do something you enjoy.

These two love trying out new breweries together, so Hitchhiker was the perfect spot to start. They grabbed a few brews to ease them into the photoshoot, we chatted with the bartenders, and got these intimate shots before heading out to the park. 

Maybe you’d swap the brews for some vino. Or grab a cute kayak or canoe as we (hopefully) head into some warmer days. You could even stay at home and pull out the checker board. Start your session with something you both love to do together to help you loosen up and add some sweet personality and flair to your photos. We’ll mix it up with some classic and traditional couple’s portraits, too.

2. Use your wardrobe. 

You can also spice things up with your outfit. Catherine wore a beautiful sweater and crimson suede skirt, which played into their dressier flirty look at the brewery. He complemented her style and looked sharp in his untucked white button-down and nice jeans.

Catherine and Alex brought along a blanket to their late-fall session to elevate the romance. Then, when they removed the blanket, she had on a pretty ruffled tank. It was cute, and it also showed a bit of skin, which is fun for engagement photos. I especially loved the look as she pulled her sweater down off her shoulders. Meanwhile, he wore a festive-yet-classic plaid shirt. Both of their looks were sweet, romantic, and absolutely perfect for their engagement session. 

3. Don’t be afraid to touch!

I know, it’s easier said than done. The photographer tells you to be yourself and ignore the camera, but there’s still a lens pointed at your face. Don’t worry. I’ll guide your poses and chat along with you so you don’t feel awkward. But the best way to spice up your session is to show a little love through physical touch. I’m an engagement and wedding photographer. I love photographing people in love! So go ahead and touch his face, let him brush your hair out of the way, tickle each other, or go in for a kiss on the nose. There’s no reason to feel silly, I just want you to be yourselves. Touch is probably a big way the two of you communicate, and it’s my job to catch it at just the right moment to capture “wow factor” images.
